- On Nov. 6, 2014, I received an email from Fairfax Cryobank about a medical update concerning the donor and an offspring of the donor as follows:
"Donor 2984 has an offspring diagnosed with a form of Ectodermal Dysplasia (ED).
What is Ectodermal Dysplasia (ED)?
This specific condition is typically inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder with symptoms involving teeth, skin, hair, nails and sweat and sebaceous glands (these are referred to as ectodermal structures). Individuals affected by ectodermal dysplasia have abnormalities in different ectodermal structures. Some ectodermal dysplasia types are mild, while others are more serious. Obvious manifestations of the disorders are not clinically apparent in most newborns. Dental (missing or malformed teeth), hair (sparse and dry), and nail anomalies (thickened, abnormal form) usually become evident during infancy or childhood. The skin can be dry and flaky due to decreased sebaceous glands. A family history of similar clinical features is helpful in a diagnosis of hereditary ED. This is the only case that has been reported to Fairfax Cryobank to date. This is a Sibling Only donor and over 20 healthy pregnancies and/or births have already been reported."
